Disney Pixar’s ‘Onward’: Our Cinemark Experience and Movie Review

Disney Pixar’s ‘Onward’ is now playing! Thank you Cinemark for inviting my family out to screen it. Here is my (spoiler-free) and honest review of our experience.

One of our favorite things to do as a family? Movie nights! With so many different personalities, movies are one thing we can always agree on. So we were all very excited to see Disney Pixar’s Onward right when it came out.

About Disney Pixar’s Onward

“Two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, go on an journey to discover if there is still a little magic left out there in order to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember him.”

A Mom’s Review of Onward

Onward begins with a little backstory of the world we’re diving into; how once magic was a part of every day life but with the rise of technology, it became less and less present. So in this unmagical, modern day society we meet our main character: an elf named Ian Lightfoot. Like most teenagers, he is awkward, shy, very unsure of himself and questions everything. Ian has an older brother, Barley, who is his complete opposite.

It is Ian’s 16th birthday. While his mother and Barley are excited to celebrate, it is very clear Ian wishes his father (who died when he was a baby) was there. Well, it turns out that their father planned for this day and left both brothers a magical staff and spell that would allow them to bring him back. The catch? It’s a one time use spell and only lasts for 24 hours. After that, they will never have the chance to see their father again.

After fumbling the spell, Ian and Barley are left with only the lower half of their father’s body and set out on a quest to complete the spell. I promised no spoilers so I will stop here. But what I will tell you is that this film takes you on quite a magical adventure. We absolutely loved and give it 5 stars. Also, bring tissues! In true Pixar fashion, Onward is guaranteed to make you shed a few tears.

Our Cinemark 18 & XD experience at HHLA

As I mentioned before, Cinemark invited us to screen Onward at the Howard Hughes Center

This was my first time being at the HHLA since the remodel and let me be the first to tell you- they definitely upgraded! The modern, minimal design is beautiful. The HHLA also has many options for food and entertainment, as well as the Cinemark theatre. After our movie, we enjoyed food from the Cinemark’s restaruant Studio Eats, with a few mamas and their families from the LA Mommy Blogger Tribe.

With our busy family, date nights out are so rare. Whether it’s our next date night or another movie night out, I know we will be spending it at the HHLA and I can’t wait.

Thank you again Cinemark for a successful family night out!
